If you’re looking for an easy camping dinner that doesn’t require a ton of ingredients or prep work, this Meatball Marinara Texas Toast is exactly that. Frozen meatballs, Texas toast, marinara, and plenty of melted mozzarella come together right on the griddle for a meal that feels a little like meatball subs and garlic bread had a very delicious baby.

Meatball marinara Texas toast with mozzarella and Parmesan cooked on a Blackstone griddle for an easy camping meal

This is the kind of camping recipe I love because it’s low effort, inexpensive, filling, and everything can be cooked in one place. Plus, using frozen meatballs keeps the prep to a minimum, which is always a win at the campsite.

Why You’ll Love This Camping Recipe

This Meatball Marinara Texas Toast is perfect for camping because there really isn’t much to it. You only need a handful of ingredients, there’s very little chopping or prep, and the entire meal can be made right on the griddle.

It’s also an easy recipe to adjust depending on how many people you’re feeding. Make a few pieces for a quick family dinner or fill up the griddle if you’re cooking for a crowd.

Ingredients

  • 24 frozen meatballs

  • 6 slices frozen Texas toast

  • 1 ½ cups marinara sauce

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons Tuscan herb seasoning, divided

  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil

  • About ¼ cup water, as needed for steaming

Plan on about 4 meatballs per piece of Texas toast.

How to Make Meatball Marinara Texas Toast on the Griddle

1. Cook the Meatballs

Preheat one side of your griddle to medium heat and add a little oil. Place the frozen meatballs on the griddle.

Add a small amount of water around the meatballs and immediately cover them with a griddle dome. The steam will help the frozen meatballs heat through while they cook.

Continue cooking until the meatballs are almost completely heated through.

2. Toast the Texas Toast

While the meatballs are cooking, set the other side of the griddle to low heat.

Place the Texas toast directly onto the griddle and let it cook until the bottom is golden and toasted.

3. Add the Marinara

Once the meatballs are nearly finished, pour the marinara sauce over them and sprinkle with a little Tuscan herb seasoning.

Let the meatballs simmer in the marinara while your Texas toast continues cooking.

4. Build the Texas Toast

Flip each piece of Texas toast once the first side is toasted.

Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over each piece of toast, then place four meatballs on top of each one.

Add another layer of mozzarella over the meatballs.

5. Melt the Cheese

Add a small amount of water to the griddle around the Texas toast, being careful not to pour it directly onto the bread.

Cover everything with a griddle dome and let the steam melt the mozzarella.

Once the cheese is hot and melted, remove the Texas toast from the griddle.

6. Finish and Serve

Sprinkle each piece with grated Parmesan cheese and a little more Tuscan herb seasoning.

Serve them hot while that mozzarella is still nice and melty.

Tips for Making This Recipe

Keep the Texas toast side of the griddle on low heat. The bread can toast pretty quickly, and you want to give yourself enough time to add the cheese and meatballs without burning the bottom.

The griddle dome is also really helpful for this recipe. Using a splash of water and covering the food creates steam, which helps heat the frozen meatballs at the beginning and gives you that melted mozzarella at the end.

Easy Camping Meal With Just a Few Ingredients

This is exactly the kind of recipe I want when we’re camping. There’s no complicated prep, no long ingredient list, and no pile of pots and pans to deal with afterward.

The combination of crispy Texas toast, marinara-covered meatballs, mozzarella, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning makes it feel like a much bigger meal than the amount of work that actually goes into it.

If you need a quick griddle dinner, easy camping meal, or inexpensive campsite recipe, put this Meatball Marinara Texas Toast on your list. It’s simple, filling, and definitely one of those meals where nobody needs to know how little effort you actually put into it.

You definitely don’t need a lot of special equipment to make this Meatball Marinara Texas Toast, but these are three Blackstone accessories I use all the time and that make this recipe even easier.

Griddle Basting Dome A dome comes in especially handy if your Blackstone doesn’t have a hood or cover. I use it twice in this recipe: first to help steam and cook the frozen meatballs, and again at the end to get all that mozzarella nice and melty.

Blackstone Squirt Bottles I always keep squirt bottles near my griddle, usually one for oil and one for water. The oil makes it easy to prep the cooking surface, and a quick squirt of water is perfect for creating the steam you need under the dome.

Blackstone Tool Holder & Magnetic Hooks This is one of those simple accessories that makes cooking on the griddle so much easier. The tool holder keeps my spatula right on the back of the griddle instead of taking up cooking or prep space, and the kit also comes with magnetic hooks for hanging other griddle tools and accessories.
